7mm SSW Ammo

· 2 min read

The 7mm stw ammo was designed in 1979 by Layne Simpson as a wildcat cartridge. It requires a magnum action and a 26-inch barrel to reach top velocities.

Factory ammunition is available from Nosler and Hornady in 140-grain Partition and 160-grain AccuBond Long Range loads. These provide consistent velocities that harness premium, controlled-expansion projectiles for optimum performance on light through medium game.

Nosler Partition

The Partition is one of Nosler’s original premium hunting bullets. It’s great for big game like deer and moose. It doesn’t have the high Ballistic Coefficients of Nosler’s newer lines, but it still holds up against the competition when it comes to penetration and expansion.

This bullet has dual lead cores separated by a gilding metal partition. When it hits a target, the front core expands quickly to transfer massive shock and energy while the rear core retains up to 65-70% of its original weight for deep penetration. This bullet is available in both premium factory loads and components for reloading. It is one of the best all-around hunting bullets ever developed.

Hornady InterBond

A monolithic hunting bullet, the InterBond is bonded together to prevent core-jacket separation under high impact velocity. This design also allows the bullet to retain a significant amount of its original weight and achieve deep penetration.

This bullet is available in a wide range of calibers and bullet weights. It is typically used for deer, antelope and other small game. However, it is also suitable for heavy-framed dangerous game species.

The Hornady InterBond uses a unique bonding process to prevent core-jacket separation. This makes the bullet a deadly projectile for thick-skinned dangerous game. Its tough copper-clad steel jacket is bonded to a lead core for deep penetration without over-penetration. It is available in both a boat-tail and flat base versions. The DGX and DGS Bonded Dangerous Game series load features Superformance powder for optimum pressure and velocity control.

Barnes TSX

Barnes offers a wide range of hunting ammunition for all sorts of big game. Their TSX bullet is an all-copper hollow point that groups well at long range, reduces barrel fouling and offers excellent expansion on impact. You can find videos on You Tube of a TSX hitting ballistic gelatin or apples and expanding to four razor sharp cutting edges.

One downside of TSXs is that they can be unstable in fast rifling twists and may need to be used with caution on certain types of game animals. They do, however, produce very clean wound channels. In addition to that, their solid copper construction retains more of its weight than a lead core jacketed bullet and enables them to penetrate deep. Their roundness also produces minimal meat damage. Federal Trophy Bonded Tip

Designed to penetrate thick hides and take down larger, big-game animals (it was created for African game), the Trophy Bonded Tip is found in several Federal Premium ammo lines, including the Trophy Copper, Trophy Sledgehammer Solid, and Vital-Shok. It has a polymer tip that enhances expansion, as well as skiving in the front of the bullet to speed up initial penetration. It also retains a lot of its original weight, which is attributed to the solid copper shank and bonded core.

These are excellent big-game bullets. They can also be loaded for deer and smaller game, although they will have less devastating wound channels than Accubonds. They perform very well in the field, with reports of great accuracy and plenty of trophy hunt stories to go along with them.
